Captain America 4 theory: Chris Evans’ alternate HYDRA Steve Rogers will be the villain | Films | Entertainment

Last week, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier concluded with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson finally becoming Captain America. While on that very same day it was reported that a Captain America 4 movie is in the works, with the Disney+ miniseries’ showrunner Malcolm Spellman working on the script. While Mackie and Marvel are playing it coy, there has been buzz that Chris Evans could be returning.

Back in January, Deadline reported that Evans was nearing a deal for an MCU return, although the star later tweeted “News to me.”

But then in March Giant Freakin Robot reported that Marvel were planning a Captain America 4 that will feature the Steve Rogers star.

No doubt such a movie would have Mackie’s Cap front and centre, but we wouldn’t be surprised is Evans returned in some fashion.

While the whereabouts of Old Steve, last seen in Avengers Endgame, remain unknown there’s always the possibility that Evans could be playing an entirely different character.

The MCU is set to explore alternate realities going forwards, and with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arriving next year who knows what weirdness is in-store.

Well, another reliable insider in Daniel Richtman reported months ago that Evans has been in talks to play an evil alternate Steve Rogers who works for HYDRA.

This incarnation of Cap was last seen in the Marvel Comics storyline known as Secret Empire.

Not only this, but the insider’s sources claim that Evans’ evil Steve is set to fight the new Captain America himself, Sam Wilson.

Perhaps Evans will return as this HYDRA Steve in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before playing the villain in Captain America 4? Heck, maybe he could even team up with John Walker’s US Agent.

Whatever the case, playing a different character rather than risk undermining Old Steve’s ending could be a great way to reintroduce Evans to the MCU.

Meanwhile, Richtman also reports Evans has been in talks for a second project involving his Cap. Allegedly it takes place after Endgame when he’s living through the 20th century and somehow ends up battling the MCU’s version of Wolverine.

And while the scooper didn’t know the facts on a third project, there have been rumours of a Disney+ show or movie revealing what happened when Captain America returned the Infinity Stones to the past.

On top of all this, Giant Freakin Robot have reported that not only will Evans play HYDRA Cap in Doctor Strange 2, but also another superhero.

Before he became Captain America, the star was best known for playing The Human Torch in Fox’s Fantastic Four movies.

Since Disney now own the rights, we wouldn’t be surprised if a whole host of Fox characters turned up, just like Evans Peters’ Quicksilver in WandaVision.

And let’s not forget all those rumours of previous Sony Peter Parkers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield turning up Spider-Man: No Way Home this Christmas.

Aside from the multiverse being explored, there’s also time travel, as introduced in Avengers Endgame.

This June sees the release of Loki on Disney+, following what happened next to an alternate version of the god of mischief who escaped with the Tesseract in that blockbuster. From the trailers, it looks like he’s been recruited by the Time Variance Authority to fix his timeline.

And on top of all of that, time travel villain Kang the Conquerer is being introduced in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will release in cinemas on March 23, 2022.
