This is pretty significant given how long Tom Hardy and James Norton, now joint-second at 3-1, have held the top spot.
But if that’s not enough, Betway have announced that next Bond betting is suspended following the news of Page’s departure from Bridgerton.
A spokesman for the bookies said: “Following the announcement that Rege-Jean Page has left his role as Simon Basset, the mysterious young suitor in Bridgerton, all betting on the Next James Bond market has been suspended. Are we finally about to get the long-awaited announcement on Daniel Craig’s replacement as the next James Bond?”
Page himself recently caught up with The Mirror, sharing he’s “flattered” by the Bond speculation.
The 31-year-old said: “Ah, the B word. I think that if you are British and you do anything of note, that other people take notice of, then people will start talking about that.
“I think that’s fairly normal and I’m flattered to be in the category of Brits that people have noticed. Nothing more – or less – than that.”
“I think the concept of having plans in this moment in history is mildly hilarious. So I’ve given up on making them.”
Speaking with Total Film last year, the Bond producer said: “It will have to be reimagined, in the way each actor has reimagined the role.
“That’s what is so exciting and fun about this franchise; the character evolves. Eventually, when we have to think about it, we’ll find the right person.”
Broccoli also confirmed that while Bond will always be played by a man, the actor can be of any ethnicity.
The 60-year-old added: “He doesn’t need to be a white man. Not as far as I’m concerned. We should create roles for women, not just turn a man into a woman.”
Interestingly, when Bridgerton first aired, Page’s pinned tweet on his official Twitter account may have been hinting that he’d love a go at playing 007.
Above a video of his Duke of Hastings walking towards the camera, a caption read: “Regency, royalty. Shaken and stirred.”
It may be a coincidence, but that last line sounds a lot like 007’s classic martini drinks order of “shaken not stirred”.
In the meantime, Page is keeping busy with Hollywood starring roles. He’s currently shooting action thriller The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, while he’s also signed on for Chris Pine’s new Dungeons and Dragons movie.
