But, with UFC president Dana White already installing Colby Covington as the next contender to face reigning undisputed UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Edwards’ next move remains unclear, even if he defeats Diaz in emphatic fashion this weekend.
Edwards had earned a split-decision victory over Icelandic submission ace Gunnar Nelson in the main event, while Masvidal had stunned the London crowd by knocking out Darren Till in the main event.
And, as Masvidal was being interviewed backstage by UFC reporter Laura Sanko, Edwards shouted something at the American from off-camera.
It prompted Masvidal to leave Sanko in the lurch as he ambled over to Edwards, and hit him with a quick multi-punch combination before security dived in to prevent a full-on brawl.
The exchange, which Masvidal described as giving Edwards “a three-piece and a soda,” has gone down in UFC folklore, but the rivalry has never been settled inside the cage.
And, if Edwards gets past former Masvidal victim Diaz this weekend, Bisping said the time could be right for the pair to be booked, and perhaps even added to the same fight card as Usman vs. Covington.
When asked if he’d accept that matchup if he was in Edwards’ position, Bisping replied, “Me in that scenario? 100 per cent.
“If that’s me, I’m dying to fight Masvidal.
“We all know what happened, the ‘three-piece and a soda.’
“That’s assault. You started a fight with me backstage.
“You didn’t start a fight, you punched me in the face. So we’ve got unfinished business.
“So, if I’m Leon Edwards, that’s the only fight outside of a title fight that I would accept.”
And Bisping liked the idea of adding the feuding duo to the main card underneath the Usman vs. Covington title rematch, too, as it would give the UFC a contingency plan, and multiple options, if anything went wrong with the main event during fight week.
“I think that would be great,” he said.
“Because if anybody gets injured in the main event you’ve got Masvidal or Leon to choose from as sensational backups. “And Masvidal needs a fight, as well, so yeah, not bad!”
