“And we are going to have a good chance to look at Jesse, as are the supporters, and we will be able to decide what we think in five or six months’ time.”

However, former West Ham winger Trevor Sinclair has questioned whether the signing of Lingard was “necessary”, telling talkSPORT:  “Talking about Jesse Lingard, I’m not so sure.

“I know David Moyes has worked with him before. He is a good player, or he has been in the past. But you look at his record; 2017/18 – 33 games and eight goals in the Premier League.

“In 18/19 he had 27 and four, then you go to 19/20 and he only played 22 games and scored one goal. So, for me, I don’t think he is necessary.”
