Petra Kvitova withdraws from French Open with freak injury after doing press duties | Tennis | Sport

“Unfortunately, after an MRI and much discussion with my team, I have made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it.

“It’s incredibly bad luck, but I will stay strong and do my best to recover in time for the grass-court season.”

Kvitova was scheduled to face Elena Vesnina, but the doubles specialist will now advance to the third round.

There’s already been a number of upsets in the women’s draw with top seed such as Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza losing in the opening round.

British duo Johanna Konta and Heather Watson also failed to progress to the second round, losing to Sorana Cirstea and Zarina Diyas respectively.

World No 1 Ashleigh Barty also survived a scare in her opening round match against American Bernarda Pera, needing a third set decider to advance.
