Queen ‘not damaged’ from Harry revelations says royal expert

Kate and Prince William have not “replied in kind” to the comments made by Prince Harry and Meghan during their public appearances and interviews over the past few months, according to writer and commentator Melanie Phillips. Rather, she said, they carried on with their work, showcasing duty to the Crown, modesty and loyalty.

In an op-ed published by The Times, Ms Phillips wrote: “When people are personally attacked, the public look carefully at how they react under such pressure.

“The Cambridges have not replied in kind to the histrionics from Prince Harry and his wife.

“Instead, they have responded with grace and the patent desire to heal the rift.”

The Duchess of Cambridge, Ms Phillips added, appears to have been particularly driven in her efforts to heal the rift between the royal brothers.

Ms Phillips wrote: “The principal mover in this appears to be the Duchess.

“Kate seems to be an instinctive peacemaker, anxious to bring the feuding brothers together for the sake of all-important family unity.

“Her gestures at Prince Philip’s funeral aimed at enabling a conversation between William and Harry gained wide attention and approval.

“It was here that the steel in her character, and its value to the Royal Family, became apparent.”

Ms Phillips referred to the successful attempt by the Duchess of Cambridge to break the ice between her husband and her brother-in-law following the funeral of Prince Philip.

On April 17, after the poignant funeral service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, Kate was spotted starting a conversation with Prince Harry while Prince William was speaking to the Dean of Windsor outside of the church.

As the royals started to walk back to Windsor Castle to attend a reception hosted by the Queen, the Duchess of Cambridge drew in the conversation her husband.

She was then seen smoothly leaving the brothers alone to speak as she joined Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The funeral of Prince Philip marked Prince Harry’s first return to the UK since March 2020, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex completed their last-ever engagements as senior royals.

The service took place more than a month after Meghan and Harry sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they spoke about their mental health, their lives and struggles during their time as senior royals and their relationship with members of the Firm.

Meghan mentioned Kate while speaking about the press coverage she experienced.

Recalling a story first published in late 2018, Meghan said it was not true she had made the Duchess of Cambridge cry in the run-up to her own Royal Wedding with Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex claimed the reverse had actually happened, but Kate had owned up to it and apologised to Meghan after leaving her in tears.

Both Prince Harry and Meghan spoke about the Queen in the highest terms, with the Duchess saying the monarch had always been wonderful to her while the Duke said he highly respects his grandmother and shares an understanding with her.

Speaking about other close relatives, however, Harry said he felt “let down” by his father and he is now on a different path than his brother.

During the interview, the Sussexes also made damaging claims of neglect and racism agains the palace.

The Queen issued a brief statement in response to the interview, in which she said she the family was saddened to hear how much Meghan and Harry had struggled as senior royals and that it would address privately the issues they raised.

However, Prince William broke ranks and, during an engagement in London, he replied to two questions from a member of the press.

After saying he had not yet spoken to his brother after the interview but would do so soon, the Duke said the Royal Family is “very much not a racist family”.

A month after the funeral and his return to the US, the Duke of Sussex spoke again about the Royal Family and Prince Charles in particular.

During an episode of the podcast Armchair Expert, the Duke appeared to criticise his upbringing, saying he aims at “breaking the cycle” of pain he suffered while growing up with his children.

Appearing in the docu-series focused on mental health he created with Oprah, The Me You Can’t See, the Duke of Sussex spoke, among other issues, more about his upbringing, claiming the Prince of Wales told him and William they were to go through his same difficulties and pain he himself had experienced when he was younger.

He also claimed the Royal Family did not speak about Princess Diana’s death and accused the Firm of “total neglect” when he sought help for him and Meghan in the light of intense online abuse.
