Prince Philip funeral: Harry and William leave service together

The two brothers, whose rift has been well documented in recent months, are understood to have chatted for hours after their grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday. Their father Prince Charles was also present, sparking hopes their relationship will be mended. Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey will have undoubtedly come up in conversation, an insider has claimed.

A source said of their conversation: “It is not known what was said behind closed doors and when the cameras were turned off, but it’s unfathomable to think Megxit and Oprah did not come up.

“Harry and William appeared cordial as the cameras rolled and that seemed to pave the way for Charles to join them when everyone had left.”

William, Harry and Charles are understood to have stayed at Windsor Castle together for two hours after the conclusion of the funeral.

The reunion has sparked hopes the Duke of Sussex is taking steps to heal his rift with the Royal Family, particularly his older brother.

Prior to the funeral, Harry had spoken with William and Charles over the phone.

But US anchor Gayle King, a friend of Meghan’s, revealed the chat had been unproductive.

The peace talks were held after the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah, where the pair accused an unnamed member of the Royal Family of racism.

Harry also claimed his brother and father were “trapped” within the institution.

Kate tried to “break the ice” with Prince Harry at Prince Philip’s funeral rather than “get revenge” for Meghan Markle’s claims to Oprah Winfrey, according to a royal expert.

The Duchess of Cambridge chatted to Harry as the royals left the funeral at St George’s Chapel on Saturday before subtly moving away after they were joined by Prince William to give the brothers time alone.

Writing in the Telegraph, royal author Angela Levin said: “Stepping forward to talk to Prince Harry and you could tell by her soft movements that rather than get revenge for the criticism his wife Meghan Markle had aimed at her during Oprah Winfrey’s bombshell conversation, she was trying to break the ice.

“As William joined them and Catherine quietly stepped down off the pavement to give the brothers space to chat, she then quite naturally stepped back to talk to Sophie, Countess of Wessex, occasionally taking a glance at the two men.”

Prince William and Prince Harry are “parking their feelings” to support the Queen through the grief of losing Prince Philip, according to a royal commentator.

Royal expert Russell Myers told Sunrise: “I think amicable might be pushing it slightly but people I have been speaking to have said the brothers are united in grief at this stage.

“And certainly, they are putting things to bed for the meantime.

“This is all about supporting the Queen, supporting the rest of the family and giving the Duke of Edinburgh this send-off he deserves.

Royal commentator Richard Kay has said there remain several “unresolved” issues within the Royal Family, in the wake of the Oprah interview.

Writing in a column for the Daily Mail, he said: “The fall-out from Harry and Meghan’s Oprah Winfrey interview is still raw and its issues, not least the claims that a member of the Royal Family had made racist comments about the colour of their son Archie’s skin, remain unresolved.”

9am update: Kate joins forces with Sophie and Anne to make sure The Queen is ‘not alone’ this week

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and other close relatives of the Queen have devised a plan not to leave the mourning sovereign alone after the loss of her husband of 73 years.

A source claimed the Queen “will not be alone” in the coming weeks, as she continues to mourn the great loss of Prince Philip.

Senior royals have agreed on a plan which will see the Queen’s closest relatives dropping by Windsor Castle for a visit, contacting her via video call and share her workload, the insider said.

The source told the Mirror: “The Queen will not be alone. She will have others who care about her deeply and want to be there to support her in her most pressing hour.

“In typical fashion, the Queen has insisted she is coping and despite the suggestion she had prepared herself for this day to come, everyone is well aware there is nothing like the experience when it comes.”

8.30am update: Queen set to get bulk of Prince Philip’s £10million fortune

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Britain as a penniless and stateless refugee but he left this world with an estimated £10 million fortune.

Buckingham Palace has declined to say what will happen to his estate now but it is likely he will leave most of it to the Queen, who is exempt from inheritance tax under a special deal struck between the monarchy and the Government.

That deal is based on the assumption that the monarch is unable to work or trade to grow his or her private wealth unlike others. It enables monarchs to pass on their private wealth to the next sovereign.

Royal consorts are not strictly covered by the same exemptions as monarchs but the exact details of Philip’s estate may never become public.

Unlike everyone else’s, Royal Family wills tend to be sealed under a practice begun after a sex scandal in 1910 when Queen Mary’s brother, Prince Francis of Teck, left jewels to a mistress.
