Bill Gates and his wife Melinda French tied the knot on a golf course on the Hawaiian island of Lanai on January 1, 1994. But now almost 30 years down the line, the pair have announced they are going their separate ways in a post on Twitter. The shock update came just a week after the recent public appearance together at a virtual event for healthcare workers.

The statement said: “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work, we have made the decision to end our marriage.

“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.

“We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue to work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.

“We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

Does Bill Gates have kids with wife Melinda?

They have three children: Jennifer, 25, Rory, 21, and Phoebe, 18.

Jennifer is a medical student. Having graduated from Stanford University in 2018 with a degree in human biology, she is attending medical school in New York City.

She got engaged to Nayel Nassar, a professional Egyptian equestrian, in January 2020.

She once said of her childhood: “I was born into a huge situation of privilege, and I think it’s about using those opportunities and learning from them to find things that I’m passionate about and hopefully make the world a little bit of a better place.”

Rory is believed to be studying law.

His mother penned an essay about him for Time magazine on his 18th birthday, which read: “Rory is compassionate and curious. He’s intelligent and well-read and deeply informed about the wide range of issues that interest him.

“He’s a great son and a great brother. He’s inherited his parents’ obsessive love of puzzles. But one of the things that makes me proudest is that Rory is a feminist.”

While Phoebe studied at The School of American Ballet as well as the prestigious Juilliard School.

Mr Gates is the fourth richest man in the world with a fortune of $124billion. But his children aren’t set to inherit a fortune on his death. In fact, the couple have raised their children in surprisingly modest ways.

The three weren’t allowed phones until they were 14 and help wash the dishes every night.

And they will ‘only’ inherit $10 million each as Bill has made clear his children will only get “a minuscule portion” of his wealth, with the rest going to charity.

The family also actively attend church together, with Bill Gates telling Rolling Stone magazine: “We’ve raised our kids in a religious way.

“They’ve gone to the Catholic church that Melinda goes to and I participate in.”

But while it may seem the couple had an idyllic home life, Bill struggled with the demands of work and juggling that with his family.

In 2019, Melinda told The Sunday Times: “We’ve just gotten to a point in life where Bill and I can both laugh about more things.

“And, believe me, I can remember some days that were so incredibly hard in our marriage where you thought, ‘Can I do this?’”

The Microsoft founder became the world’s youngest billionaire aged just 31 in 1987 – the same year he met Melinda.

They married six years later – but the entrepreneur had to convince himself he was doing the right thing, according to Melinda.

She said: “When he was having trouble making the decision about getting married, he was incredibly clear that it was not about me, it was about “Can I get the balance right between work and family life?”‘
